I think the unit was great but has issues when used for production purposes.
Rating: 4.0

  • Application Area:Make pressed pellets

"The press works, however with continual use oil leaks seem to be an issue. I contacted customer service and they sent me new gaskets and seals but this was only a temporary fix. The contact I was communicating with was also in England (I'm in the US) so this also delayed the fix."

  • Application Area:Printing inks

"The Atlas Manual Hydraulic Presses works well and helps us with our work, but sometimes the pressure is not maintained and one has to adjust it. Atlas heated, it would be good if the top plate tubiera temperature sensor, because when the top separates the temperature increases a lot causing it to burn."

Good results with fine ceramic powders, only if used with a die lubricant.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Pressing ceramic powder samples

"For my purposes of pressing ceramic powders, it is important to know that a lubricant is more than likely required. The fine, hard ceramics I use have caused the pellet to be very difficult to remove from the die if no lubricant is used. The fine powders get wedged in between the cavity in the wall of the die and the pellet, and when significant force has to be used to remove the pellet, the powders can scratch the walls of the die. This produces uneven surface finish, and makes it difficult to reproducibly make pellets. However, if a lubricant like zinc stearate or similar is used, the process becomes much more pleasant, and can be fairly reproducible. Inevitably some samples will still come out cracked, but overall it is a robust process."

Specac’s Atlas Series Manual Hydraulic Press is available in 15 and 25 ton load configurations, and is intended for a wide range of laboratory press applications. The press has a compact, small footprint design making it ideal for bench-top and glove box laboratory applications.

With a rigid steel construction, and protective safety shield as standard, this laboratory hydraulic press is particularly well-suited for FTIR KBr pellet press, XRF pellet press, and thin film press applications when used in conjunction with Specac Evacuable Pellet Die assemblies or Heated Platens and associated Thin Film making kits.

The easy-to-read dual scale gauge is calibrated in both UK imperial tons and metric tons, and an adjustable pressure control value allows reproducible load for repetitive applications. A range of conversion gauges (0-1, 0-2 and 0-5 Tons) are available for low pressure hydraulic press applications.
