"This instrument is very easy to use, and it is designed to be compact and small, so we can put it inside the glove box to make pellets for air-sensitive materials, such as sulfide solid electrolytes. The maximal pressure can go to 15 tons, which is totally enough for common use. The price is very very reasonable and affordable. Love this instrument."

Robust piece of equipment

"The product over all has been robust, with multiple users in the lab and constant use the equipment has not had any issues. One thing that was created for the lab was a step guide on how to use it based on our needs for training and referencing. "Although this product has a graet value for money and an avereage after sales care, the main issue on the daily tasks whenever using this instrument is the front plastic cover. Whenever your making a tablet, its necesary to scroll the top screw up and down, but if the front plastic cover is up its impossible, you have to go to the side and its simply not practical because you're unable to see your sample. Maybe a redesign of the product would be very good."

"Press worked fine for prepping samples for FTIR work. Liked the cool down with water feature. Press did not leak hydraulic fluid as some other presses from other suppliers have in the past. (We had to keep the other press in a shallow tub because of leaking!) We have since moved on to a larger press from another supplier as we need larger samples for some other testing"

"The Specac Atlas press is a great, compact pellet press. Easy to use, robust, and can achieve very high pressures for such a small press. Great for small pellets (7mm) up to reasonably large pellets (19mm). The service for maintaining the press was also excellent; at one point a component broke and we were able to easily get replacement components and instructions from Specac to get the press back into operation quickly. I've been quite pleased with the press and support!"

"This product is very easy to use and can be set and maintained proper pressure through multiple attempt. The diecast of sample preparation can be easily attached with this machine. Installation and demonstration by company Engineer is up to the mark. Maintenance of this machine is very low cost and company support is provided for maintenance, service and repair. Most of the maintenance can we do ourselves without company support. Pressure gauge calibration is almost perfect within tolerance limit. Physical work on this machine is not hard at all; very reliable effort is required to handle without hard physical activity. Recommended by me and by our department to all researchers who is working in the field of solid state physics; they have to think about this brand before purchasing."

"The Atlas press with heated plates worked flawlessly from day one. It was easy to setup and train other people to use it. There came a time when our process flow required less force with the press. We reached out to Specac and they offered an adapter kit that allowed us to use the press in two different modes of force. We were able to maintain the original setup and that was invaluable. The kit was easy to install and operate. Many microfluidic chips were made with this press in our microfabrication cleanroom. From this research, many articles and papers were published, as well as multiple PhD's issued. Thanks Specac for making reliable, rugged products and maintaining excellent customer service!"

"Hydraulic press works like a dream. I use the press in conjunction with the heating platens to melt press ion exchange materials together. In the past I had used a muffle furnace and a C-clamp to do this and I had to make 5-10 samples to get 1 good sample. With the press the prepared membranes work nearly every time with much greater control over the experimental conditions. The machine is very easy to use the one thing I would change it add an indicator for the maximum pressure release. It made my life as a graduate student so much easier, as it gave me a facile and repeatable method for processing my materials. I give tours to perspective students and I always say that the press is the only machine on campus that will work every time you use it."

"I only have one concern. It takes to long to cool down. From 150°C down to 40°C takes 40 minutes! A real disappointment, we often have a lot of samples to mould, and it will take to long. The old Specac presse we have takes ~5 minutes to cool down. Otherwise it is OK"

"For my purposes of pressing ceramic powders, it is important to know that a lubricant is more than likely required. The fine, hard ceramics I use have caused the pellet to be very difficult to remove from the die if no lubricant is used. The fine powders get wedged in between the cavity in the wall of the die and the pellet, and when significant force has to be used to remove the pellet, the powders can scratch the walls of the die. This produces uneven surface finish, and makes it difficult to reproducibly make pellets. However, if a lubricant like zinc stearate or similar is used, the process becomes much more pleasant, and can be fairly reproducible. Inevitably some samples will still come out cracked, but overall it is a robust process."

The Specac Manual Hydraulic Press is available in 15 and 25 ton load configurations for a wide variety of laboratory pressing applications. It is ideally suited to the manufacture of KBr pellets for FTIR spectroscopy as well as sample pellets and targets for other spectroscopic techniques such as XRF, Terahertz, and laser ablation spectroscopy. With additional equipment such as the Heated Platens and Constant Thickness Film Makers, it becomes suitable for analysis of polymers and thin films. In addition to all these, the sensitivity and accuracy of load application facilitates other laboratory tasks, including assembly and fabrication, powder synthesis, and tablet compaction for pharmaceutical tests.
