Novel method/instrument but not reproducible.
Rating: 2.3

  • Application Area: Particle analysis in biotech products

"Its principle of operation is novel. However, the reproducibility is poor and therefore the data my not be reliable in many cases. But its an important characterization tool for biotech products in pre-filled syringes."

Manufacturer's Response

Thank you for your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that you are not finding your data reproducible. We would be happy to review your measurement method to aim to improve this with you. There is also a very good paper that could help you ensure that you obtain the best possible data for your biotherapeutic sample: Product Characterization. Kreuger A, Hadley J et al. A good supplement to flow imaging microscopy but expensive.
Rating: 4.3

  • Application Area:Particle characterization (silicone oil vs. proteinaceous particles)

"We use the device for further characterization of small particles observed with flow imaging microscopy. The main application is the distinction between positive and negative buoyancy masses. This application works well and we rarely have problems with big particles clogging a capillary as we characterize the samples before the Archimedes measurements and can treat the samples accordingly. For the additional information obtained the price for the device is quite high."

Instrument did not generate any data and is considered un-repairable now
Rating: 2.0

  • Application Area:Pharmaceutical biologics

"This instrument did not generate any data after the purchase. The problem was constant clogging and hardware failure. Finally, Malvern engineer deemed it un-repairable and unusable. Thus, purchasing this instrument was a waste of money since there was no return for its value Not easy to use. Constant clogging. Not reliable"

I wish I could return this instrument.
Rating: 1.7

  • Application Area:Differentiate silicone and protein particles

"This machine has never been functional for long. Have had glass vials explode and sensor port catch fire. Very displeased with overall function."

Sub-visible particle detection, counting and characterization.

Archimedes is a new, highly innovative instrument which uses the technique of resonant mass measurement to detect and accurately count particles in the size range 50nm - 5µm, and reliably measure their buoyant mass, dry mass and size. Particularly useful for the characterization of protein aggregates in formulation or buffer, Archimedes is also able to distinguish between proteinaceous material and contaminants such as silicone oil by means of comparing their relative resonant frequencies and buoyant masses.

Central to Archimedes is a MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology sensor, allowing the highly sensitive, reliable and reproducible measurement of aggregates, one by one. Archimedes is also capable of providing information on sample concentration, viscosity, polydispersity, density and volume, and distinguishing between negatively buoyant proteinaceous particles and positively buoyant contaminating silicone oil droplets.

Archimedes Particle Metrology System Benefits:

  • Ideally positioned for biopharmaceutical manufacturers and developers.
  • Unique and accurate particle counting capability in the size range 50nm - 5µm.
  • Exquisite sensitivity: measurement of particle mass to 350ag.
  • Highly accurate particle size measurement from 50nm to 5µm.
  • Excellent size resolution, <20nm at 1µm diameter.
  • Low sample consumption: only 100µL.
  • Differentiation between negatively buoyant and positively buoyant particles.
  • Capable of measuring high concentration samples (to 109 particles/mL) and high viscosity samples (to 100cP).
  • Fast, NIST-traceable calibration.
  • Highly reproducible results.
  • Intuitive and flexible ParticleLab software.
