"The 6490 mass spectrometer has standard MS/MS scan capabilities, but is really designed and intended for a novice user. Many features for the operation of the instrument are automated, which is perhaps good for an inexperienced user. However, a mass spectrometrist is limited by what the software will allow. For example, tuning, resolution adjustment, and calibration are relatively restricted to automated procedures, rather than allowing the operator to adjust and set the instrument as desired. Sensitivity of the instrument is average or below, compared to other triple-quad instruments on the market, particularly negative-ion experiments. The instrument also has somewhat unstable ionization."

"Utilizing our new improved method, we have reach a highly sensitive way of analyzing low levels of metaldehyde within water. Using the Agilent 6400 LC/MS QQQ this has been accomplished, only problems which have occurred is with the maintenance as this can become problematic when organizing availability of engineers "

  • Application Area:Quantify the ammounts of different DNA bases in genomic DNA ( DNA adducts and epigenetic marks)

"The Instrument was purchased about 2 years ago, at this time it showed best sensitivity for nucleoside detection if compared to to triple Q models of Thermo, Waters, or Absciex at this time ( LOD ~20 fmols). We are a scientific group but have ran the instrument day and night since the purchase. It runs with minor technical problems, some can be solved by us, some require parts replacement and done by the service engineer one or two days after the call. It maintains the calibration over weeks or even months, requiring minor attention for cleaning and re-calibration. In general Agilent instruments are very well engineered and manufactured and this is instrument is one of such examples. We are very satisfied with its performance."

"It is a very robust instrument with high sensitivity, it has not totally proven it self in the Residue chemistry area but I think it has a lot of potential to be one of the best. The software needs some work but the Mass hunter has put Agilent with the best. It is easy to clean and maintain. One negative is that sometimes you have some variability between sample injections but it is compound dependent. I recommend this instrument for Environmental analysis, and some residue studies."
