- Life Technologies Expands Food Testing Portfolio to Global Brewing and Beverage Industry
Product News: Life Technologies Expands Food Testing Portfolio to Global Brewing and Beverage IndustryLife Technologies Corporation has announced the expansion of its food safety portfolio by partnering with PIKA Weihenstephan to provide molecular testing solutions for the detection of spoilage organisms in the brewing and beverage market. Life Technologies is now the only supplier to provide both enrichment media and PCR kits designed to suit the changing needs and challenges in beverage quality and safety.
"The partnership with PIKA Weihenstephan shows Life Technologies' commitment to go beyond pathogen testing by providing the same level of high-quality testing solutions for spoilage organisms, which are a constant threat in the brewing and beverage industries," said Nir Nimrodi, Vice President and General Manager, Animal Health & Food Safety at Life Technologies. "For major brewing labels in particular, protecting consistency in product quality and making sure their beer tastes good, is a critical component to brand protection."
Combined with PIKA Weihenstephan's Fast Orange™ Nutrient Broth, brewers will be able to conduct testing in one streamlined workflow solution. This will enable "at-line" testing during processing, helping to prevent spoilage and identify potential sources of contamination.
Fast Orange™ Nutrient Broth contains an indicator that changes color if growth of the target organisms occurs. It can be a stand-alone method, but in combination with PCR-based tests also from PIKA Weihenstephan that run on Life Technologies market-leading real-time PCR instrumentation, brewers have the flexibility to shorten time-to-result by several days and increase the level of information obtained from the brewing process.
For generations, brewers have been looking for ways to eliminate beer spoilage bacteria, which can impact the smell, taste and clarity of the end product. By partnering with PIKA Weihenstephan, Life Technologies will offer, not only the testing solutions, but also the consultancy services for brewers to understand and respond to positive test results.
PIKA Weihenstephan, a spin-off from the internationally recognized Technical University Munich, is located in a major hop-growing region of Germany. The company has a long history of developing products and innovative methods for microbiological analysis for breweries.
