At the Society of Neuroscience Annual Meeting 2012 in New Orleans SelectScience met up with Prof. William Klein from the Department of Neurobiology at Northwestern University to find out more about his pioneering Alzheimer’s research. In this video he discusses the potential of molecular MRI for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Following the discovery of ADDL (Aβ-oligomer), a neurotoxin responsible for the synaptic damage that causes memory loss in AD, Prof Klein and his colleagues have developed an antibody to target this neurotoxin. Prof. Klein tells us how they are able to trick the blood-brain barrier, deliver the antibody to the hippocampus and visualize them through traditional methods such as fluorescence microscopy.
